OVERVIEW: The AN/AVQ-23 Pave Spike is an airborne laser target designator pod, designed to improve day time/visual conditions attack capabilities.
DETAILS: The AN/AVQ-23 has both a laser designator/ranger and a TV sensor for target acquisition. Although primarily used for the designation and accurate delivery of laser-guided weapons, the laser range finder also improves the accuracy of "dumb" bombs.
NOTES: The AN/AVQ-23 was used by the USAF between 1974-89. The RAF used the system from 1978-1992. It is also used by Turkey.
