Developed by the Denel company, this IR-guided weapon entered service in 2006. It is launched vertically from 6-round VLS packs. So far sales have been slow, with Chile and India evaluating and rejecting the weapon. However, in 2005 Finland selected it for the Hamina class of missile boats, and for the Hameenmaa class minelayers when they enter refit in 2007-2008. In 2006, the South African navy announced it would retrofit Umkhonto to it's four MEKO A-200 class frigates.
