OVERVIEW: GLOBUS I was a radar designed for monitoring Soviet SLBMs, ICMBs, and the Pletesk spaceport.
DETAILS: CREEK MAID was the overall name of the project and consisted of two landbased stations in Vard�, Norway. Located near the Russian border it is capable of monitoring and building a signature database of Russian missiles. Additionally, the site is well placed for precision data collection on the warheads and decoys carried by missile fired toward the United States from Russia or the Persian Gulf.
NOTES: CREEK MAID was the overall name of the project, with the Norwegian version denoted as GLOBUS. Globus I in Vard� became operational in 1965. It consisted of two landbased stations. Subprojects and upgrades were called MAD CAT, CORVUS, MAID MARIAN and SOUTH SEA. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the US withdrew financial support for the project. Since then, Norway has continued to operate the radar from its defense budget.
