OVERVIEW: Type 88 Tactical Control 2D Radar system from the early 1960s developed for the Royal Artillery's English Electric Thunderbird VR.725 SAM system. "Green Ginger" was to be mobile and capable of following the Army in the field.
DETAILS: Green Ginger radar system used two radars Type 88 and Type 89 Height Finder radar. These main elements were integrated with a battery command post. The sight of these units prompted the squaddies to call them Noddy and Big Ears, after the cartoon characters. Unfortunately the Army found that Green Ginger was too big to airlift in the RAF's transport aircraft and helicopters, so was passed to the RAF for use as tactical radar.
